“I’m really sorry about this.” Luc holds my hand as the plane prepares to land at O’Hare Airport in Chicago the following Monday.

“Thanks for coming with.”

As much as I couldn’t afford to, I cancelled all my auditions for today and tomorrow, but I’m really hoping to be back in New York by Wednesday.

“When’s the last time you came home?” I ask him, trying to distract myself from the fact that my ears don’t like popping on the descent.

“Longer than you.”

Not much for words, I realize how hard this is for him.

Chicago doesn’t hold many good memories for him, other than those of us. And even those aren’t all so fabulous.

“I really appreciate you coming.”

“You already said that.” Luc glances over and squeezes my hand back, knowing how nervous I am. “When’s the last time you saw or spoke to John?”

“I think I was eight. Maybe seven.”

“Wish I could say the same about mine.”

“Yeah, I know.” I sigh. Poor Luc.

Closing my eyes, I try all the tricks to get my ears to pop, and once the wheels hit the runway, finally, I get some relief.

When I open my eyes, I see Luc giving me that look, like if I get near sharp objects, I’ll intentionally impale myself.

“It’s going to be fine,” I say.

“I’m supposed to say that to you.” Luc widens his beautiful eyes.

The two of us stand up and get our carry-ons out of the overhead bin then we follow the line off the plane and inside O’Hare.

After a short jaunt through the airport, we walk outside to the cabs lined along the road.

My cell phone rings. It’s my agent.

Before I answer, Luc waves then goes to grab us a cab.

“Hi Natalie.”

“Ready for some good news?”

“Yes?” I narrow my eyes, not expecting much.

“Call back tomorrow. Envy”

I stop walking and my jaw drops. “Are you kidding?”

“Would I joke about Envy? This is it, Merlot. The thing you’ve been waiting for.”

Being honest, I’m totally floored. And what the hell is up with my timing?

“I can’t tomorrow, I’m in Chicago.”

“What the hell are you doing in Chicago?” Natalie follows that up with how she has been busting her ass to get me this audition only to have to reschedule.

Honestly, as much as I want that part—I also don’t. Because that part means leaving New York again. Something I’ve been trying not to do, avoiding auditioning for any part that could send me away again—any role apart from Envy.

Envy would be worth leaving town for. The question is, would it be worth losing Alec and Luc?

Of course not, but would that happen if I got a part like that?

Luc waves at me from a cab a little ways down the line. Finding one interested in leaving the city to drive us to a suburb twenty minutes away is sometimes a difficult task.

“My father is here, and he’s dying,” I say. “I will be back in town by Wednesday, Thursday tops. Can you reschedule?”

The line is silent for a second, which is a second longer than I have.
